Pirates Of The Caribbean Gold Coin

Treasure

I went dumpster diving for buried treasure, and now you can have my booty!!!A few years ago, I sold quite a few gold doubloons from Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean on eBay with great success (feel free to check some of my feedback history). In May of 2002, I was working on the Disney Lot in Burbank, California (next to stage two, w they were shooting 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl'). While I was t they were demolishing the Pirates set and dumping everything into these giant trash dumpsters.Anyway, in the process a few hundred of these cool fake gold doubloons ended up in the dumpster along with a lot of the black creosote and old lumber. At first I was going to leave them alone, but after the dumpster sat t for a solid week, I decided that their trash could be my treasure. The first time I dived in it went pretty badly, and because it was under the cover of darkness I kept getting these nasty metal and wood splinters. The next time I brought a flashlight and gloves and I made out like a bandit.

Everyone at work was laughing at me, and thinking I was crazy for picking through the trash in my dress clothes, but I had a good feeling about these coins, and this movie (I didn't know at the time that t would be another two sequels that would eventually follow). In the end, I ended up with a collection of two very different kinds of coins. I've now done some research to find out that three types of coins were produced for the movie. TYPE I coins were made in abundance (in the thousands), out of tin, and since they were lightweight, and cheaply made, they were only used to decorate the set in the background.

I had about 100 of these and sold them all very quickly on eBay a few years ago. TYPE II coins are made in limited supply (in the hundreds), out of solid heavy metal, they are gold colored, but are made out of brass or some kind of amalgamation. They are very solid and heavy and have the look and feel of a real gold doubloon.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opens in theaters across the nation on May 25th!! In celebration of the big release, I have some fun activity sheets and a bonus Oreo Gold Coin Recipe to share with you all! If your family is anything like mine, we love to create fun recipes. This necklace/coin is an exact replica of the original featured in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The Necklace is 24-karat gold plated and comes in a presentation box with a prop replica story imprinted on inside cover.

These coins were used on the set in medium shots as hand props. I now have less than 30 of these, and have kept them this long because I thought they might be worth a bit more over time. TYPE III coins were made in very limited supply (in the dozens) and were designed and hand-crafted by artists specifically for close-ups with Johnny Depp and the cast. Unfortunately, I do not have any of these, but if I ever find one sitting in the trash, I'll be sure to get it for you.I have seen a few other listings for Pirate's coins on ebay, some even come with a little brown pouch, but all of them are TYPE I coins. They are very cheaply made out of tin, and they certainly don't compare to the quality and design of these TYPE II gold doubloons (the picture above is a TYPE II coin, encirled with dozens of TYPE I coins). The others I have seen are most certainly fakes (even if they do include a certificate of authenticity - a certificate from whom is a good question to ask) I know this because I personally visited the set, and I know better from first hand experience.

So if you do buy from another seller that's telling you that theirs are authentic, just make sure they look just like the one in my listing, otherwise you are most likely being scammed. What I am able to offer you in this auction is ONE of the limited number of TYPE II coins that I still own. It's 100% genuine, and is truly one of only a handful of existing authentic screen props used to represent the plundered pirate treasure of Isla de Muerta during the production of the film. They are about the size of a silver dollar (as you can see from the picture), but since they are made out of solid metal, they have a nice feel/heft/ring to them.

The coins were manufactured to look handmade, are slightly irregular, and some of them may exhibit some wear and/or patina since they were really used in the filming, were often under water, and then saved from the trash heap by yours truly. On the front of the coin, it has the words 'HISPANIARVM. REX. 1701' stamped on it,.
