Well here we are, as we anticipated, with a detailed cam swap project for the Torino. Most camshaft swaps are presumed to be 'step ups', in that there is an increase in the camshaft size in hopes to gain power. Well we're doing the opposite in this cam swap project. Our 351 Cleveland was originally built with road racing in mind. Q: Power band best between 2500-6500 - with that goal in mind, is a stroker the right thing to do? I think a stroker loses the ability to rev high and quickly? Dan: Why do you think that? Q: The typical Cleveland build up - with stock displacement, 4V heads, roller cam and roller rockers seems to yield 400-425 horsepower on the engine.
3351C4V Cam Change: Installation19 Changing a cam is a back breaking chore, especiallyon a lowered car. But we're confident it will be all worthit with the around town drivability we'll achieve.20 With the old cam and lifters removed, we spentsome time cleaning off all the old gasket material, andusing a shop vac to suck up and crud, coolant, and oldsilicone from the intake valley.21 It's always wise to clean new cams with solventand blow dry with compressed air, to ensure any machiningoils and grit are removed.22 Looking at the two cams side by side, the differencesare apparent. Note the steep and narrow profile of theUltradyne cam (right) compared to the less aggressivelobe profile of the Crane cam.23 Using a long bolt to help support the cam, weslid the cam in to the first bearing, then applied theCrane moly lube generously on the camshaft lobes whileslowly guiding the camshaft into the bore. The cam retainingplate is then reattached.24 Similarly, the lifters were coated with molylube and carefully placed into their bores. There is noneed to soak them in oil to 'pump them up' priorto assembly.25 Since we were installing the cam 'straightup' with no advance or retard, we opted not to degreethe camshaft. They do a great job of instructing you of the various after market components you can use to make your 351 a street performer.
They provide information on many different street performance products, such as ignition coils and distributors. They provide information on the good and the bad, and highlight products that would go well with your selections. Whether your questions are on block preparation, cylinder head sources, carburation, exhaust, this book covers it in detail. I saw plenty of Ford 351 Windsors, Chevy's with the 327 and 396 engines, and Plymouth's with the 383 engine, but seeing a stock 351 Cleveland was far and few between.Now you can build one from the ground up.
